# 5: Points Moderately East Edition-I-74 Journey

Nicholson's Tavern and Pub- Cincinnati, OH
SEE.  This acronym exemplifies the sheer joy that I have every time I visit the downtown Cincinnati jewel, Nicholson's Tavern and Pub.  The most comprehensive selection of Scotch in the Tri-State Area. Check.  Europe's finest classic brews on draft.  Check.  Flavorful and masterfully crafted European inspired flavors and flair.  Check.  Everything is here in one place.  Claiming to be the Queen City's first and finest gastropub, it fits that description and so much more.  I cannot visit Cincy without at least a brief hiatus at this locale.

# 4: Southside Represent! Teddy's Burger Joint Connects

Teddy's Burger Joint
Joint.  The word has many different meanings in the American English lexicon.  Joint is a noun, adjective, or verb that can be used in many different ways.  A joint is a place at which two or more things are joined.  A joint is the connection between bones that allows movement.  So a point where something comes together to create movement.  Okay. But in geologic terms it is a fracture or crack in a rock mass along which no movement occurs.  That's contradictory to the general term.

In slang, joint has many other meanings. A joint is a cheap or disreputable gathering place. A joint is a building or dwelling.   The "joint" is a prison. Of course, a joint is also a marijuana cigarette. According one dictionary, a joint is also slang for the penis. I'm no closer to understanding the many differing meanings of the word joint, but it really doesn't matter.  This is because Teddy's Burger Joint is neither a penis or a prison or even the connection between bones that allows for movement of the human body.  Teddy's Burger Joint is a location for gourmet homemade burgers, good beer and wine, an eclectic environment, and great company to be had with friends and family.  Best of all they have Sprecher Root Beer on tap.  Nothing beats amazing root beer on tap.  Nothing.  Unless of course you don't like root beer or you hate life itself, which are basically the same thing. They are practically interchangeable.  I mean, who hates root beer?  Not me, but moving on.  Teddy's is a restaurant you have to visit for so many reasons.  They offer a unique dining experience without being too kitschy.

Indoor picnic tables, concert stage, indoor heater, kids play room, outside fenced in sandbox, and a picture wall of losers and failures of intense burger challenges.  Can't beat a place that follows by the philosophy of the trophy generation, giving even losers trophies just for trying.  Hey, you aren't good enough but to make you feel important and respected and loved as an individual and keep you suffering from any sort of post traumatic stress from the failure that will ultimately undermine any future relationships you may have, we will take a picture of you to chronicle your failures for future patrons to see.  I think its great.  It may sound like I'm being negative about this approach but I love it.  These challenges are tough and people should be commended for trying and falling flat on their face.  Plus it makes those of us that could never beat a challenge like this feel better about ourselves.  Viva la Losers!  Keep em coming.

#3 Points South Edition: Twisted Trail Travels

Located south of Indianapolis lies a beautiful stretch of colorful hills that come alive no matter the time of year.  The fall offers vibrant colors among the hills and the trees.  The winter offers beautiful snowcapped log cabins and ample time to sit by the fireplace and watch the snow fall.  The spring offers rebirth of life and rejuvenation as flowers bloom and we feel alive again awaken from our winter doldrums.  Summer offers water activities, hiking, and sitting back on the porch wasting the days away.  What is missing from all of these wonderful seasons?  How about a nice handcrafted, locally made beer and great local eats.

The Twisted Trail is a great place to find all of these wonderful things.  The Twisted Trail is a is a 40-mile stretch of scenic highway that connects three distinctly different communities, each known for its rich arts heritage, lush landscapes, and eclectic retail and art. Along state road 46 from west to east, Bloomington, Nashville, and Columbus offer their arms wide open welcoming everyone.

Upland Brewing Company-
My journey began where all Twisted Journeys should begin... Bloomington.  I was here mostly for fresh food, liquid libations, and lively conversation.  Since no trip to Bloomington is complete without stopping by Upland Brewing Company, that is where I journeyed to first.  Upland is one, if not the best and largest, breweries in the state of Indiana.  Known for their emphasis on organic and environmentally conscious menu Upland continues to cater both the college and community crowds.  No "Breaking Away" townie versus college student hatred here.  Its all love.

"Greatest Spinach Artichoke Dip Ever"- IndyBitez
On this visit I ordered the Spinach Artichoke Dip with the warm flat bread and blue corn tortilla chips.  The meal can be described in two words... delicious!   This was and still is the best spinach artichoke dip I have ever put inside the entrance that leads to my secondary pleasure center, my taste buds.  The inclusion of both pita bread and blue corn tortilla chips really enhances this dish.  They show the versatility of this amazing little dish.  The blue corn chips really bring out the nuances of flavor in the dip with the salty goodness of the chips playfully bantering with the creaminess of the dip.  The warm pita bread is a delight even without the dip.  Bring them together and the reaction is illegal in many states, including but not limited to, Mississippi.

With all that greatness I needed something to wash down and quench my thirst amid all the excitement.  I chose Upland's German Altbier from their draft selection of handcrafted brews made on premises.  The malty sweetness was a great complement to the food and provided for an dancing party inside my mouth.   This isn't the only beer they have that will make your mouth feel like an ABBA tribute concert.  This beer is only one of Upland's many rotating specialties and seasonals as well as their regular lineup.  From the easily approachable  Upland Wheat to the range of IPAs like Dragonfly or Double Dragonfly to the fruity/sour lambics made from blueberry, pomegranate, strawberry and others, you will not be disappointed.  Come down to Bloomington or visit your local beer store or bar and try some Upland today.  You will not be down about something this good.  Also check for Upland on the small screen on the show "Parks and Recreation" about a fictional town somewhere south of Indianapolis.  Several Upland beers are routinely featured in bottles on the show.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bloomington Brewing Company @ Lennies Restaurant Brewery and Pub
Next on the journey was a quick jaunt through town to the other brewery in town with the name that is hard to forget where it is located.  Bloomington Brewery is the small guy compared to Upland but they have expanded recently so expect to hear more about them soon.   They are on their way up in production and visibility.
Calzone with Pepperoni and Sausage
Small Sample of BBC Beers
Located inside Lenny's Restaurant Brewery and Pub, this place is harder to find than Upland but well worth the search. While there I decided to try one of their delightful calzones.  Can't go wrong with pepperoni and italian sausage.  The calzone hit the spot for sure, but what really did it was the amazing selection of beers that were spread out in front of me for as far as the eye can see (If the eye is staring directly at the beers in front of me and nothing else.)  All the beers looked and smelled great but the hop of my eye was the Homegrown Pale.  This was brewed with hops grown on a farm in the country outside Bloomington that is owned by the brewer/owner/BBC Co.  Think Global, Drink Local.  This motto sums up my excitement for this beer.  It is hard to get more local than a local brewer using locally grown resources to create something beautiful.  The freshness of this beer envelopes the senses as the hop aroma is pleasant and inviting.  I thoroughly enjoyed this beer as well as the entire catalogue of beers I tried.  If you live in Indianapolis and are not making it to Bloomington anytime soon, visit Scotty's Lakehouse where Quarrymen Pale Ale and Ruby Bloom Amber are routinely on tap.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Big Woods Brewing Company-
Brown County, Indiana.  Home of the 2nd greatest town called Nashville in the country.  Brown county is a wonderful, quaint vacation spot for tourist from Indiana and all over to come visit and soak in the county for all its glory.  In the center of it all is Nashville, a town designed to cater to these tourists with touristy things like art galleries, chocolate shops, mini golf, winery, handcrafted goods, antiques, Coca Cola store, and the sorts.  The newest inclusion to Nashville is something for the townsfolk as well as the visitors.  Big Woods Brewing Company is located just west of the main drag on a road that I would more affectionately call an alley.  Even knowing the address, I had to walk around several times before finding it.  Once there, my journey was all worth it.
Beer Menu at Big Woods

Set in a rustic nouveau cabin is Big Woods.  With a small patio area and a slightly larger inside, Big Woods offers a brewpub with all the intimacy that a small town brewery can offer.  On the night that I came the place was busy with people outside waiting there turn to enjoy the delights of the food and beer.  Today was steak special night where they cook the steak on the grill outside.  The smell was intoxicating.  Unfortunately the only thing that would be intoxicating me that night would be the beer.  I was way too full to eat by the time I made it to Big Woods.  I already have it on my calendar to come back and try that wonderfully delightful steak.  But enough about my tears, back to the beers.  I tried all six of their beers they had on tap. All the beers were good.  I had previously had the signature beer, the Busted Knuckle. This is a hybrid between a porter and a red.  Although it is confused, you will not be after trying this beer.  You will know that you love it! Come try them all for yourself.  When in town don't forget to buy a shot glass or a mug or t-shirt.  If you do not do any of those things at least buy someone a good beer.  Drink up!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Power House Brewing Company @ Columbus Bar
The last leg of my journey brings me to Columbus to partake in Columbus beer history.  The Columbus Bar is a staple in downtown Columbus.  This bar was known for good beer even before Power House Brewing began brewing.  Once again, I came to Power House Brewing strictly for the beer.  At the bar you can do samples of a number of good beers that they have on tap.  You can mix and match Power House  beers with other local, regional, and national beers to get a sampling of greatness.  I chose the White River Brown Ale and Diesel Oil Stout.  Both beers were just what I needed to end my night on a high note.  The stout is one of the best stouts in the state of Indiana, probably the best.  The brown ale was perfectly crafted and was a delight.  The bar has great guest beers and several of its own as well as a great group of patrons to waste your night away.  Come for the beer, stay for the food, come back for the company of strangers that will not be strange for very long.

Visit the Twisted Trail in South Central Indiana for whatever whets your whistle and fulfills your appetite for delight.

#2 Points North Edition: Lafayette is for Lovers... of Fine Food and Beer

People's Brewing Company
Viva la Revolution!  Of beer that is.  Locally made, artisanal, flavorful beer is starting to become imbedded in the culture of central Indiana.  One such brewery that is making waves in the foam and suds is People Brewing.  Arguably the greatest name for a brewery ever.  Simple, sweet, empowering.  This beer is of the people, for the people, and by the people, as well as savored by anyone and everyone.

People's Brewing offers a tap room where patrons of the people can come and sample the latest goodies offered by the brewery.  Specialties and seasonals so something new is always ready to stare at you with its beautiful blonde, copper, brown, or black eyes.  Ahh, love at first sight.  During my visit I toured the brewery and then sat down to watch Purdue lose and sample the breweries IPA, People's Pilsner (One of my favorite pilsners), Aberrant Amber, ESB, Porter, and the Maltster.  The Maltster smelled of smoked wood and happiness.  They use Warminster floor malt that has been malted in an English malt house since 1870.  This malt really make the beer wonderful.  Plan a visit today, heck plan several visits since they constantly rotate seasonals and specialty beers.  Become a People person today!

 Lafayette Brewing Company
People's Brewing isn't the only microbrewery in town.  People's is the new kid at the table.  The elder statesman is the third oldest active brewery in the state.  Lafayette Brewing opened its doors in 1993 marking the return to fresh, locally made beer to the people of the lafayette area.  Unlike People's, Lafayette Brewing's focus is still on the beer but they gear heavily towards food.  You can't go wrong with either one.

Any visit is not complete to LBC without trying the Tippecanoe Common Ale or Black Angus Oatmeal Stout.  The stout won a silver medal at the 1998 World Beer Championships.  This is one of the best stouts around, if you don't like dark beer, then the common is the epitome of perfection.   Along with these classic beers, make sure to try the Prophet's Rock Pale Ale, Star City Lager, and Pipers Pride Scottish Ale among others.  Don't forget to try some of the freshly made Tecumseh Brewhouse root beer.  Beer, root beer, food.  It doesn't get any better.

Enough  of the liquid enjoyment, what is the solid enjoyment like?  Is the food as wonderful as the beer?  Of course!  My wife had the Ale Battered Chicken.  It was so moist and so delicious.  I have been on a pulled pork kick so I ordered the Pulled Pork Beer-B-Que.  This was a hard choice with so many great options.   Santa Fe Black Bean Burger for those adverse to eating meat.  A Double Bison Deluxe, a meat so nice they added twice.  This involves two patties of Indiana organically raised bison patties with two slices of cheddar cheese and two slices of applewood smoked bacon.  Also on the menu are LBC Cheese Steak, Spicy Shrimp Tacos, Bavarian Beer Nuggets, and the Winner Winner Chicken Dinner. The beer nuggets are balls of spicy sausage, sauerkraut and cream cheese rolled in panko bread and deep friend. Nothing says "MAN" like saurkraut, sausage, and beer. Okay, so it basically says "German", but Germans and men too.
Lafayette has two great breweries that are well worth the trip.  Make it a weekend trip.  Go to a Purdue game, visit Wolf Park, and drink some fine beer and like a howl at the moon if you feel so inclined to do so.

#1: Cicero Coffee Company: The Envy of All Ancient Greeks and Romans

The great orator, Cicero, was not one to be modest.  Cicero knew that he was the "man" and quite frankly, he was probably right based on the number of towns and cities in the United States named after him.  Another great orator, Demosthenes, put rocks in his mouth to improve his speech impediment.   To me, a mouthful of rocks does not sound appetizing at all.  Demosthenes might have swallowed a few in his day, but who knows.  I can almost guarantee that he did not enjoy the taste of these rocks as they entered his esophagus and entered the world of non-digestion.  Although this has nothing to do with Cicero the man, I reference it to make a point.   My point is that the Cicero Coffee Company in Cicero, Indiana offers breakfast and lunch that taste nothing like rocks.  This is a very good thing.  The Cicero Coffee Company has no reason to be modest.  The food is great.  Compared to rocks, I'd even say it is amazing.
Outside on patio of Cicero Coffee Company in Cicero, Indiana.

During my visit to the Cicero Coffee Company, I decided to reenact the great Demosthenes and order Cindy Loo Hoo's Smothered Eggs.  That is a mouthful... and it is hard to say ten times quickly as well.  This order consists of a split buttermilk biscuit stacked with two sausage patties, two fried eggs, and drowned in delicious homemade sausage gravy.  Do not order this if your doctor has a +/- bet on how many days you have left on this Earth.  This is a hearty breakfast and hard to finish, but well worth it.

My wife, on the other hand, went dainty and ordered the half order of pancakes.  These beautifully made pancakes were dusted with the right amount of powdered sugar on top.

Short stack of pancakes and syrup.

As well as breakfast, the Cicero Coffee Company offers baked goods, various coffees, lunch specials items like chicken panini, a classic Rueben, or even a locally raised elk burger. The Cicero Coffee Company is open for breakfast and lunch 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM Monday through Friday and opens at 8:00 AM on Sat-Sun and closes at 2 as well.  Located on highway 19 in Cicero, Indiana just a few minutes north of Noblesville.  Drop by for a visit.  Tell them INDY Bitez sent you.  Forget that, they will just look at you weirdly if you do that.

Welcome, Welkom, Willkommen, and for you Frenchies, Bienvenue!

If the title of this post gives you any clue, this is a welcome post.
If after reading the title you still had no idea what this post was about,
I feel deep sorrow for your mother and father.  They must be so proud.
Moving on.  Welcome to the Indy Bitez blog.  Indianapolis, aka Naptown,
Circle City, the Big Pasty City of Ecstasy, okay the last one was made up,
but it sounds good.

Indianapolis is one of those sleepy midwestern cities where people often
think there is not much exciting going on.  While that may be true a lot of
the time, it isn't always the case.  Even if there are days where there is
absolutely no excitement in Indy, then make food the excitement.  In a few
words, that is what this blog intends to do.

The purpose is to offer an outlet for the community to learn about new
restaurants, brewers, and winemakers,  or at least give you something to read
when on the toilet or when bored at work.  Whatever the reason, we here at
Indy Bitez thanks you and all we ask of you is that you wash your hands
before exiting the blog.

Using your phone on the toilet creates a feasting ground for bacteria.
It's nasty, so for all of us that love good food but hate bacteria, we say
Au Revoir.  Please wash your hands.

Our letter to the world (Indy at least),
Indy Bitez
